The Hotel St. George Gallery exhibits both original and archival work. As always, the best way of understanding what we are looking for is to familiarize yourself with the material we're hosting. In general, we are more keen to that which deviates from rather than adheres to straightforward representation. But perhaps you'll surprise us. What can be stated with certainty, however, is what we are not looking for:
1. We are not interested in "erotica." While we recognize that a great deal of art and literature throughout history celebrates sexuality, and that there are infinite ways of depicting sexual situations, tastefully or otherwise, the Hotel St. George is averse to showcasing explicit or graphic content.
2. We are not interested in pure photography. Again, we are sensitive to the power and beauty of which this medium is capable, but the Gallery hosts designs, not documents. To be clear, this restriction does not extend to work that contains manipulated photographs such as collages, or media so treated as to clearly evidence the hand of the artist. The bottom line is that we seek works both conceived and executed rather than merely captured.
3. We are not interested in overtly programmatic work. We feel that drawing attention to current political and social realities is indeed a worthy and vital endeavor, but one we ourselves are ill-suited to tackle directly at this time. The Hotel St. George is, first and foremost, a space for the imagination; we believe that the creation and distribution of illuminating or beguiling art is itself a protest, a symbolic crying out for tolerance, understanding, and plurality.
Please send prints, illustrations, paintings, graphic media, or text art to gallerysubmissions@hotelstgeorgepress.com. If the work is your own, type ORIGINAL in the subject heading. If it is historical, something you found or scanned from an old book, type ARCHIVAL. We accept JPEG and TIFF formats no larger than 400k.
Thank you,
Management
