If you feel you have an idiosyncratic, truthful and illuminating vision for which no clear-cut category exists, we invite you to share it with us. When we encounter an idiosyncratic work for which no clear-cut category exists, we become excitable.
When we become excitable, we publish.
That said, a few guidelines:
We are receptive to novelty but not to novelty books.
We are drawn to absurdity and satire but are not moved by broad comedy.
We enjoy stories that turn the pages but tend to veer away from commercial genre forms – in fact, we find that mainstream fiction is as susceptible to formula as any other. Suffice to say that while we acknowledge that all writing is borne of a particular tradition, and that great literature exists in all traditions, work relying too heavily on traditional paradigms may be witlessly judged according to its category, not its content. This would be our fault, of course, not yours.
We'll consider works of poetry, but we often find that we are unable to understand poetry, which would again be our fault, not yours.
We are keen to books supplemented with images, or even told entirely in images, but do not wish to publish adventure comics.
We are as readily agitated by lazy language wrapped around easily recognizable storylines as we are when otherwise exciting ideas succumb to solipsistic academic prose.
If your work is racially derogatory or exploitative of violence – particularly sexual violence – do not submit to us.

We prefer to hear directly from the author, though we will accept submissions of the same length through an agent. Please do not include an outline or a resume or a CV. The only material we need to see from you are your words. If your words compel us to, we will ask to see the rest of your work. Responses can take from two to six months, depending on our workload. Please be patient.
