DO YOU HAVE VISIONS?We hold the standard model for film submissions to be woefully outdated and inadequate. The categories traditionally presented – "Narrative," "Experimental," "Animation," and "Documentary" – are as constraining to filmmakers as they are misleading to audiences. No less cumbersome are the genre distinctions that dominate the commercial marketplace. For one thing, we believe many if not most of the best films are either hybrids of these categories (Annie Hall is a tragicomedy; La Jetee, an avant-garde pot-boiler; David Holtzman's Diary, a pseudo-documentary; The Red Shoes, a meta-musical) or members of their own unique category (what in God's name is The Beaver Trilogy?).
